This year’s event is sponsored by HSBC- The World’s Local Bank. Our goal for this event is to engage, inspire, and empower community members to act on behalf of wildlife and our environment. The event will be held Friday, May 2nd and Saturday May 3rd, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. There will be two distinct audiences for this event. On Friday, May 2nd, our focus will be 6th, 7th, and 8th graders from area schools. These students will tour the Zoo, spending a short period of time at a sampling of the booths. The groups of students will be on an Earth Expedition (scavenger hunt). On Saturday, May 3rd, the audience will be primarily family groups with children. To encourage the families to visit many booths, there will be a Seek-n-Find Game (scavenger hunt). The day is scheduled to start at 9:00 AM with a Green Road Rally for alternative fueled vehicles followed by an afternoon car show along with presentations, demonstrations and displays related to green vehicles. The latter part will take place at the elementary school located near the Motor Racing Research Center in Watkins Glen, NY. The following event information has been provided by Robert Gillespie. WHAT: The Green Grand Prix is a charity benefit one-of-a-kind educational and competitive event for Alternate Fuel Vehicles and hybrids held each year in Watkins Glen, NY. Now in our fourth year, we still host the only official SCCA Time-Speed-Distance road rally for AFVs and hybrids in the United States. We also have a “green” vehicle display, a Speaker Forum, and a student AFV design contest that we are running in many schools across the country. Our 2008 date has been set for Saturday, May 3rd. The Green Grand Prix continues to expand and evolve, striving to educate the public by offering an entertaining and informative slate of activities Last year we were pleased to welcome 2 Stanley Steamers. Bob Barrett entered his 1908 Stanley Roadster in the rally while the Stanley Museum from Kingfield ME. displayed its 1914 Touring Car. These 2 historic cars provided fascinating examples of the heritage of alternate powered vehicles in the U.S.A. C.M Lewis’s World Champion ELECTRATHON car and Jory Squibb’s 100mpg “Moonbeam” homebuilt were on display as were production hybrid vehicles from General Motors, Toyota, Honda, Lexus, and Ford. Robert “Chip” Beam’s wood chip powered S.U.V. is a perennial favorite at the Green Grand Prix. WHO: The Green Grand Prix is co-hosted by The International Motor Racing Research Center www.racingarchives.org and the Glen Region SCCA www.glen-scca.org . We encourage private owners, businesses, high schools and colleges to enter the rally and/or our vehicle display. There is no charge for school entries as education is our primary focus. People from all walks attending our 2007 event were inspired by the variety of exhibits and vehicles promoting sustainable mobility. WHEN: Saturday May 3rd, 2008.
