Propane Zero-Turn Lawn Mowers
The April issue of BUTANE-PROPANE NEWS (BPN)
contains an article, “Propane Can Clear the Air for Commercial Mowing
Industry” by John Needham. In the article Mr. Needham provides some rather
interesting details relating to zero-turn lawn mowers especially those
fueled by propane. In his opening paragraph the author states, “The Outdoor
Power Equjipment Institute (OPEI) forcasts 230,000 zero-turn commercial lawn
mowers will be shipped this year. … To date, propane accounts for only a
sliver of the fuel used to power these units …” The Propane Education and
Research Council (PERC) conservatively estimates that each of these propane
fueled mowers will consume approximately 750 to 900 gallons of propane per
year. Each of these propane fueled mowers will displace a similar amount of
gasoline with a fuel that has proven to be cheaper, will extend run time
between refueling, (And lower mower maintenance costs and may lead to
increased time between oil changes. – ed.) along with being environmentally
much more friendly than gasoline or diesel units.
Mr. Needham goes on to say that PERC points out,
“Using propane-powered mowers saves (the owning entity) money and (protects)
the environment because propane engines run clean without sacrificing
performance, delivering about 20% saving on fuel costs over gasoline (even
more over diesel – ed.) while reducing hydrocarbon emissions by nearly
70%.” Currently more than 30 manufacturers offer approximately 513
gasoline-fueled models, 69 diesel models and 16 models fueled by propane.
To obtain accurate comparison results PERC is working
with the University of Tennessee to operate two (presumably similar)
zero-turn commercial mowers, one fueled by propane and the other by
gasoline, for a two-year side-by-side study. Performance, emissions, and
economics will be compared and analyzed. The mowers were provided by the
EnviroGard division of Onyx Environmental Solutions in Monroe, N.C.
The EPA and California Air Resources Board-certified
EnviroGard propane mowers feature Onyx Environmental Solutions’ patented
vapor fuel system and Manchester Tank’s patented fuel tank. The propane
tank contains internal baffles that prevent liquid propane from sloshing
into the vapor lines during operation of the mower, especially in rough
terrain. It should also be noted that Kawasaki maintains the full engine
manufacturer’s warranty when Onyx fuel system is installed on one of its
engines for this application. (I understand that refueling may be
accomplished either by tank exchange or by local refueling from a bulk tank.
– ed.)
Currently there are 40 EnviroGard dealerships across
the United States. Jim Coker, president of Onyx Environmental, is quoted,
“Commercial mowers run an estimated six to eight hours a day. … We calculate
that if by 20012 there were 20,000 mowers running on propane, it would
represent a $200-million annual load.” (This would certainly have a small
but positive effect on reducing the annual domestic consumption of gasoline.

An Interesting Article About EV and HEV Batteries:
Design News has published an article
about batteries for electric vehicles and hybrid-electric vehicles. I
found that this informative article provides a great deal of information
about the current state of battery technology. If you would like to

Availability of E-85 (85% ethanol + 15% gas) Fuel in Rochester Area:
Did you know that the Associated Press has
reported that a second gas station
in the greater Rochester area is to start selling 85% ethanol fuel? The
second station is Mobil Mart on Brooks Avenue that is obtaining its E-85
from Western New York Energy LLC in Medina, NY. Price is expected to be
$2.60 a gallon. The Mobil 12 Corners station in Brighton also is
selling E-85. Rochester area has two of the approximately 700
nationwide stations selling E-85. Purchasers should be cautioned that
not all gasoline fueled vehicles are prepared for E-85 and that the
dealer or owner's manual should be consulted to make sure that the
vehicle has been constructed to be compatible with E-85.
EGP NEWS:
On Tuesday, 8 APR 08 I had the opportunity to attend the Genesee Region
Clean Communities' outreach event, "E-85 Technical Workshop" at the
Rochester Institute of Technology's Inn and Conference Center here in
Rochester, NY. Please visit the
"Editor's Page" to read a review on the ethanol fuel presentations.
